A NEW ERA IN DULUTH WRESTLING

Thursday night WIldcat hopefuls gathered in the Joe Marelle Gym. The purpose, to meet their new coach and hear the plan for the 2025-2026 season. Coach Newton is coming to Duluth after a successful 6 years rebuilding the Westside, Augusta program. Coach Newton said he is excited about the possibilities and the challenges that await him. He explained his philosophy and motto of "Earn the View". Newton said this is a motto he has used for all his teams to remind them that to be at the top of the podium you have to earn it and that in wrestling that means lots of hard work and self sacrifice. The Wildcats will have open mat days and conditioning starting June 9th with the summer session ending with separate Boys and Girls 3-day camps. According to Coach Newton, this summer will be about building culture, a strong wrestling base, and conditioning. "We will work hard, yes , Coach is going to join in the fun, to achieve our goals and bring back the glory of the good old days of Duluth Wrestling." In his talk with the Wildcat hopefuls he said that fellow coaches around the state of Georgia have challenged him because they remember when Duluth was a tough place to come wrestle and they want to see that toughness return. Former Screven County Wrestling Head Coach Andy Tomlin said he remembered those years with fondness and that Coach Newton can bring that back. Looking forward Coach Newton seemed to have given Freshman Jade Barba Garcia hope as they discussed the future of the girls program. "My goal is to have one of the best girls teams in the state, Newton said, "and I am going to need your help getting it started." Coach charged Jade with the task of being the leader in the search to build the Lady Cats team. According to Coach Newton it was a great night and a good start to what he hopes will be a fun season. The future of wrestling for the Wildcats looks to be tough but the road to Macon always is.
